Ingredients

  • 1 cup idli rice
  • ¼ cup poha / flattened rice / avalakki (thick)
  • 1 cup coconut (grated)
  • 1 tbsp sugar
  • 1 tsp yeast
  • ½ tsp salt

Method

  1. firstly, in a large bowl take 1 cup idli rice. you can alternatively use any raw rice.
  2. also add ¼ cup poha and soak for 4-5 hours.
  3. now transfer the soaked rice and poha into the blender.
  4. additionally, add 1 cup coconut.
  5. blend to smooth batter adding water as required.
  6. now add 1 tbsp sugar and 1 tsp dry yeast. refer the packaging instruction to activate yeast.
  7. mix well making sure everything is combined well.
  8. cover and ferment the batter for 8 hours.
  9. now mix the batter gently, make sure the batter is flowing consistency.
  10. further, add ½ tsp salt and mix well.
  11. also, heat the griddle and pour a ladleful of batter.
  12. spread out in a circular motion slightly thick than regular masala dosa.
  13. cover and roast the dosa to a golden brown from the bottom and completely cooked from the top in presence of steam.
  14. finally, enjoy vellayappam with chutney and veg stew.
