Caramelized Onion Dip
Ingredients
- 1 tablespoon vegetable oil, or as needed
- 1 large onion, thinly sliced
- 2 tablespoons butter
- 2 tablespoons white sugar, or as needed
- 1 cup sour cream
- 1 cup plain yogurt
- 0.5 cup mayonnaise
- salt and ground black pepper to taste
Steps
- Warm the oil in a skillet over low heat and stir in the onion. Cook and stir for 20 to 30 minutes, until soft but not browned. Raise the heat to high, add the butter and sprinkle the sugar over the onions. Cook, stirring frequently, for 8 to 10 minutes more, until very tender and dark brown. Take the skillet off the heat and let the onions cool to room temperature.
- Combine the sour cream, yogurt and mayonnaise in a bowl and season with salt and black pepper. Mince the cooled onions on a cutting board and mix them into the sour cream mixture. Refrigerate for at least 1 hour so the flavors can blend.
