Apple Pie Moonshine
Ingredients
- 4 lemons, halved
- 2 oranges, halved
- 3 2-inch pieces ginger, peeled, smashed
- 3 star anise pods
- 3 3-inch cinnamon sticks
- 4 whole cloves
- 8 cups apple cider
- ¾ cup (packed) light brown sugar
- 1½ cups moonshine or 2 cups vodka or bourbon
- 2 Pink Lady or Granny Smith apples, quartered
Steps
- In a large Dutch oven or another heavy pot, combine the lemons, oranges, ginger, star anise, cinnamon sticks, cloves, cider and brown sugar. Bring to a boil and cook, stirring frequently, until the sugar dissolves. Leave to cool for 5 minutes, then mix in the moonshine and add the apples. Cool fully, cover, and leave at room temperature for 12 hours.
- Remove and discard the lemons and oranges. Fill wide-mouth jars with the apple-pie moonshine, cover them and refrigerate until cold, at least 2 hours.
- Ladle the drink into glasses filled with ice when serving.
- You can prepare the moonshine 1 week in advance; keep it refrigerated.
