Chicken & Cheese Buns:
Ingredients
- 🌸Dough:
- 500 g strong bread flour
- 7 g instant yeast (1 sachet)
- 1 &1/2 Tbsp sugar
- 1 & 1/2 tsp salt
- 250 ml warm milk
- 1 large egg
- 50 g unsalted butter, softened
- 🌸Filling/Topping:
- 2 cups shredded chicken add salt & pepper to your taste
- as needed Grated Cheddar cheese and Mozzarella cheese (half & half)
- 1 egg beaten with 1 Tbsp milk (for egg wash)
- Cream cheese or chilli sauce for drizzling (optional)
Steps
- Mix the flour, yeast, sugar and salt in a large bowl, then add warm milk and egg and combine to form rough dough. Work in the softened butter and knead for 8–10 minutes until smooth, stretchy and slightly tacky.
- Put the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover it and leave somewhere warm for about 1 hour, or until doubled.
- Punch the dough down and divide into 8–10 equal portions. Flatten each a little and put a tablespoon of grated cheese and shredded chicken in the center. Pinch the edges together to form a cylinder and set on a lined baking tray, seam-side down.
- Cover loosely and leave the buns to rise for 30–45 minutes, until puffy. Brush with egg wash, then cut a small slit in each top with a sharp knife. Add a little cheese on top and, optionally, drizzle chilli sauce or cream cheese before baking in the oven.
- Preheat to 190°C /170°C fan and bake for 15–20 minutes, until golden brown. If you wish, brush on a little melted butter straight after baking for an extra-soft crust.
- Serve warm with the cheese still melty, alongside soup, as sandwich buns or simply with butter.
